Smart Cameras

Smart cameras are a combination of an image sensor and a high-performance processor that returns inspection results instead of images. While a typical industrial camera acquires and transmits images through a standard camera bus, such as Camera Link or IEEE 1394, to a host PC or vision system that processes the images, a smart camera performs all of these operations directly on the camera.

National Instruments Smart Cameras

National Instruments Smart Cameras are industrial, high-quality image sensors combined with powerful processors to create rugged, all-in-one solutions for machine vision applications. You can use these cameras for applications including quality control, packaging verification, robot guidance, optical character recognition, and 2D code reading. NI Smart Cameras integrate easily with Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs), PLCs, and industrial HMIs.

NI Smart Cameras are shipped with the NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (AI), configurable machine vision software that requires no programming. NI Smart Cameras are ideally suited for industrial vision applications including packaging inspection, assembly verification, 1D and 2D code reading, and motion guidance. NI Smart Cameras reduce cost and time of inspection by processing images on the camera with a PowerPC processor capable of running NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (AI) software, which is included with the NI Smart Cameras, or the NI LabVIEW Real-Time module and the entire suite of NI vision algorithms.

With the combination of a high-performance PowerPC processor, a high-quality charge-coupled device (CCD) image sensor, and LabVIEW, users can easily create distributed machine vision systems that transmit inspection results instead of raw images. NI Smart Cameras are designed to tightly integrate with the NI family of programmable automation controllers and human machine interfaces. Now a single LabVIEW Project can contain NI Smart Camera inspection VIs along with code for motion control, data acquisition, and operator interfaces. In smart cameras, shared variables simplify the task of transferring data among the different components of an industrial automation system.

NI 1722 Smart Camera

Low-Cost, Rugged Solution for Machine Vision Applications

The National Instruments 1722 Smart Camera, powered by a 400 MHz PowerPC processor, is a real-time target for machine vision. The high-quality Sony CCD image sensor acquires monochrome VGA (640 x 480) resolution images at 60 frames per second. Camera I/O includes two optoisolated digital inputs, two optoisolated digital outputs, one RS232 serial port, and two gigabit Ethernet ports.

You can program the NI Smart Camera with the NI LabVIEW Real-Time and NI Vision Development modules or configure the camera with NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (AI). The NI Smart Camera includes a fully functional copy of Vision Builder AI software to configure the camera.

Machine Vision Solution with Built-in Lighting Controller

The National Instruments 1742 Smart Camera, powered by a 533 MHz PowerPC processor, is a real-time target for machine vision. The high-quality Sony CCD image sensor acquires monochrome VGA (640 x 480) resolution images at 60 frames per second. Camera I/O includes two optoisolated digital inputs, two optoisolated digital outputs, one RS232 serial port, and two gigabit Ethernet ports. The NI 1742 also features quadrature encoder support and a direct drive lighting controller that can drive current controlled lights up to 500 mA continuous or 1 A strobed.

You can program the NI Smart Camera with the NI LabVIEW Real-Time and NI Vision Development modules or configure the camera with NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (AI). The NI Smart Camera includes a fully functional copy of Vision Builder AI software to configure the camera.

NI CVS-145x Compact Vision System

The National Instruments CVS-145x Compact Vision System extends the power of LabVIEW Real-Time to a new rugged machine vision package that withstands the harsh environments common in robotics, automated test, and industrial inspection systems. NI CVS-145x systems offer unprecedented I/O capabilities and network connectivity for distributed machine vision applications. They use FireWire (IEEE 1394) technology, compatible with more than 40 cameras with a wide range of functionality, performance, and price. In addition, you can connect up to three cameras to one CVS-145x to significantly lower the price of your deployed system. You can also integrate a CVS-145x with the industrial measurement and control capabilities of NI Compact FieldPoint. To program a CVS-145x, you have the choice of configuring your machine vision application quickly with Vision Builder for Automated Inspection, or programming your application with LabVIEW and the Vision Development Module.

Sony XCI-SX1 Smart Camera

With the release of the Sony SmartCam, Sony has made its mark in smart camera technology. A compact, high performance camera with onboard processing, the SmartCam is available with embedded Microsoft Windows XP accommodating installation of NI Vision Builder Software. Images are processed directly in the camera, and can be preprocessed before transmission. Sharp monochrome images captured by the CCD sensor can be processed at 15 fps (34 fps at VGA resolution).
